If 2020 has taught us anything, it is the fact that the zombie apocalypse might be just behind the corner — and we’re put against the wall.
Nah, the virus is somewhat under control — at least people are still not behaving like some flesh-eating undead creatures.
Remote work going strong!
What is not under control, though, is that remote work is gaining momentum. Businesses and individuals have been turning to remote work for a year now, and people ain’t no turning back. Just for your reality-check, just a quick paragraph including numbers (the first and the last one, we swear!).
Eurofound’s last year’s report suggested that close to 40% of EU citizens started working from home full-time as a result of the pandemic. Those were the numbers to consider at the time of publishing in September. Before the pandemic, just 15% of EU citizens had ever worked from home. Those are some skyrocketing numbers, to say the least! When it comes to self-employed individuals, in 2019, almost 36% of people were sometimes or usually working from home. That is a 6% rise from 2009.
No more commuting, saving time and money
If you’re like us and you invested all your money on your project and/or NFTs, you don’t have $ for gas. Consider that a plus! No more commuting means more time and money to do what you love (keyword is “do” here, don’t get lazy). For example, you can use the extra time to run, get a bike, or have breakfast with your closest ones (please don’t eat the cat food though, it’s for cats only).
The joy of missing out
Let’s say you’re an introvert and that colleague sitting across your desk is a complete retard. Ha, what a wonder, if you work from home, you don’t have to see him (or smell him) anymore! All other perks of remote work include doing your housework, cooking, having that smoke whenever and wherever you want. We also appreciate not being called an alcoholic if we open up a cold one on a stressed day.
PRO TIP: In order to keep your job, things still need to be done. Don’t relax too much!
People are good for you (sometimes)!
On the other hand, the biggest dispute is you being available all day. Even if you worked that 9-to-5 job, there’s always that colleague to Slack you hours after you’ve finished your work. Lack of socialization is also a huge issue when teleworking. As well as the lack of physical activity, it can lead to serious health issues (and we’re not kidding about that, take your time to exercise and spend time with people)!

Since most people are pretty much forced (for the sake of maintaining their health) to work from home, digitalization comes hand in hand in such scenarios. Digitalization has been a working horse behind numerous businesses of all scales, educational systems, governments, economic structures, etc. Just imagine not using cloud services and messaging channels daily for work-related (and those less work-related) tasks and basic communication. What a crappy world!

COVID-19 outbreak made us think about the new way of working, made us all create different conditions and environments for ourselves. We needed to adapt to the new routine and implement it in our space, which I think we succeeded in doing. The coronavirus pandemic has induced one of the most extensive global experiments in organizing work outside the office instead of in the office. In Wespa Spaces, in addition to coworking space and office rent for a day, two, a week, a month, or more, there is also the possibility of “hybrid” office work, which has recently become an increasingly cost-effective way of work organization. Hybrid office work means that companies can rent several working seats, meeting rooms, workshops, or conferences rooms, which thus allows regular work from home, with occasional meetings “in the office,” and since the rented seats are not related to people, therefore more teams, within different days, have the opportunity to use the same space, at one cost. This way, companies have the chance to reduce the cost of office space and keep the concept of working together when necessary in an environment specifically adapted to the new situation. Our prediction is that the future work lies in blockchain, and we’ll try it ourselves. Our plan is to spread awareness of the concept of tokenization in the region because it’s something that is widely distributed in Western Europe and the USA, where they already recognize the benefits of tokenization. It’s seen as an approval to the standard ways of handling real estate, investing in real estate, and so on. By tokenizing part of Wespa Spaces assets and offering them to individual investors through Wespa Spaces branded platform, we believe we can prove a new investment concept and a lower entry barrier for retail investors to become part of Wespa Spaces story while exploring cutting edge crowdfunding investment technology.
Maja — graphic designer/web designer
I have been freelancing for a couple of years now, out of a pure desire to organize my own business, strictly define work, and make money. I mostly search for jobs in creating websites, webshops and I also do graphic design. Despite the pandemic, I continued doing all the work because of the free nature of freelancing — time optimization and work optimization were the crucial points for me. Nevertheless, being a freelancer isn’t an easy task. You have to deal with all sorts of reviews and client satisfaction. The main problem for me is also a smaller profit because the pandemic also brought a financial crisis. Still, in the end, it is a matter of agreement between the freelancer and a client.
Marko Hlebar — software engineer
I have been working remotely and freelancing for the past 5 years, and my work has pretty much been unaffected by COVID-19. The only difference is not traveling to meet my colleagues in Zurich, which we usually did every 3 months. There will definitely be a shift in the way we work. More remote work, since companies realized that the productivity hasn’t decreased in the past year, offices are expensive. Talented individuals are easier to find if you don’t limit your search to your region or country. With the rise of automation, more and more conventional jobs like drivers, shop clerks, etc., will be lost. Therefore we will have to find new ways to keep people occupied. I see a future where cities are getting decongested from the daily commute, and communities of like-minded professionals are formed in nearby villages, where exchanges of ideas are done. Most of the actual work will be done remotely.
Whether you like it or not, freelancing and remote work are the ways to go in 2021 and will further expand in the following years.
